Server Temporarily Offline

Hi all,

My blog wasn’t the most visited site on the net, but there were a few communities hosted on the server that I was using, along with some of my code examples etc.

Unfortunately, the deal I had which was basically allowing me to host my stuff on servers I helped maintain as a volunteer effort, seems to have gone away. The hosting company that hosts the servers have pulled the machines offline, and I’ve not been able to get in contact with the guys there.

This doesn’t really surprise me, I kind of expected it, just not so soon, and not before I had a chance to make other arrangements.

So, if you use NodeQuota (my Internode usage meter), or were a member of rpg-dungeon.com or creeperparty.net, please be aware that I’m making efforts to recover the machines so I can grab the data off them and bring the sites back online fully.

I’m sorry about the downtime, but please bear in mind that these things are purely hobbies for me, and I work on them only in my spare time – with new baby and work commitments, that’s meant very little time to work on them at all.

I do have a new server being built and hosted on the west coast of the US. I chose that location because bandwidth is far cheaper there, and I can get a lot more bang for my buck.

Thanks.

Thanks for the redirect to get info out.

These things will happen and I hope you do manage to at least get your data back out of the systems.

Thanks for all your work.

if you want a hand with getting rpg-dungeon back online i’d be happy to help with any technical challenges email me, i’d be happy to offer any assistance I can.

I could bring the site back online now; the problem is the forums as we know it would be gone.

I’ve still not heard back from the original hosting company, so that might need to be what I do. If so, I’ll run XenForo which is better anyway.

so if you did that what would happen to the forums on rpg-dungeon would that mean it wouldn’t exist cause there is a post we have put up on rpg that we need the info off

The PbR game is not far in and easy to restart, so hang in their players!

Hi daryl rodda,

There mustn’t have been ongoing backups copied offsite or Chrome would have them already (I wonder if “dropbox” or similar program would be suitable for that purpose?). Chrome mentioned owning the servers that ran these forums so he should be entitled to get them back with data intact once he gains access to the site and boxes. Until then, it could be that the forum is rehosted using Xenforo and everyone’s previous posts are migrated into it later when the data is recovered.

I’d be very happy to administer rpg-dungeon.com forum as is using phpBB but if it’s rehosted on Xenforo I’ve read there’s a phpBB to Xenforo migration path that should leave groups and permissions intact and of course migrate user posts*.

On top of the flashy presentation, Xenforo might be able to enable other improvements such as have Polls working again, better Text Formatting options within posts (tables would be great. Apparently it has a WYSIWYG Editor), and an ability to easily and reliably restore file attachments to posts.

I’m sure Chrome has it all in hand and we just need to wait for Australian RPG Dungeon…the rebirth. :)

@Aussiegamer – We are looking forward to continuing PbP game.

Cheers,
Silke

* The process looks a bit clunky with examples of “phpBB3 –> vB 3.8 –> xenForo” and “phpbb 2 board, first to vbulletin, then to xenforo”

Hi guys, it’s been a week and still no word from the people who have the machines.

I did have backups, but they were stored on the other machine. I never considered that I’d ever lose access to the machines, but rather, one of the machines might die. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

So, I’m going to install Xenforo, and we’ll start from scratch there. If I ever get the old forums back, I’ll run them up and you can copy any posts you wanted from them over to the Xenforo forums.

Stay tuned.

New forums are up; obviously all of the forums will need to be manually recreated.
