From the front line of the Revolution

in Personal

My bit of philosophy for today.

There are those of us in the tech industry who believe we’re the front line warriors for the next revolution.

Revolutions have in the past been fought with swords and fire, with guns and cannons. The next revolution is one fought with words. With thought. With ideas and with communication.

But what is this revolution leading to? My firm hope is to a better future for this world. I can’t begin to guess at how that future will turn out, but I can certainly hope. And I can harken to the idea that the work I’m doing to provide internet services is in my small way helping bring about this new future.

The internet is a wonderful thing. Communications are a wonderful thing. Technology. It all enables people who are on other sides of the world communicate and share ideas, beliefs and ideals.

Sure, there will be clashes, skirmishes if you will – as you can see with the brewing controversy over the US President’s comments that creationism’s ideas may be valid and that evolution should be viewed with sceptical eyes.

But ultimately I believe the increase communication flow between the different people’s of the world – and I mean everyone – including those in the third world countries who have no idea that such technology exists – I believe this increased communication flow will eventually ’smooth out’ those with extreme views on society reforms and on religion.

There are no more great wars or revolutions to fight in but this one. It will be the longest war ever fought, and either a united society will emerge at the end of the centuries over which it will be fought, or civilisation will remain fractured and incomplete. I refuse to let my pessimism believe that Human nature will lead us to the latter, so I choose to believe in the former.

Revolution is here! Viva le Revolution!

Now go, soldiers, and fight your small battles against ignorance and vanity. The work you do is good.
